Bio
Cozy Powell, the indelible force behind a drum kit, remains one of rock’s most enduring figures, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of popular music. Born Colin Trevor Powell on December 29, 1947, in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England, his journey from a sleepy English town to the amplifiers of the world’s stages is a testimony to his unwavering passion and raw, blazing talent.
The son of an engineer, Powell’s fascination with rhythm made its first appearance at a tender age. By his teenage years, he had adopted the nickname "Cozy," inspired by the jazz drummer Cozy Cole. It was around this time that Powell began honing his craft by playing along to records. In 1965, he formed his first band, the Corals, and briefly joined the Sorcerers, a progressive rock outfit that gave Powell his first professional break. Powell swiftly distinguished himself with his energetic style and powerful play, which would become his calling card.
His big break came in the late 1960s when he joined the Jeff Beck Group, replacing drummer Aynsley Dunbar. This association was pivotal, opening doors and affording Powell the chance to play with one of rock’s guitar luminaries. His tenure with Beck showcased his ability to combine the finesse of jazz with the fire of rock, particularly notable in tracks like "Got the Feeling" from the album "Rough and Ready." While their time together was relatively short-lived, the exposure bolstered Powell’s reputation as an elite drummer.
Through the 1970s, Powell gathered acclaim and a reputation for his heavy-handed playing style. In 1973, he formed the critically acclaimed band Bedlam, though it was his solo career that exploded onto the scene with "Dance with the Devil," a single that climbed to No. 3 on the U.K. charts, becoming something of a drummer’s anthem for its irresistible beat and bombast. The track was a commercial hit, cementing Powell’s status as not just a band member but an artist in his own right.
Powell's collaborations are a testament to his versatility and the high regard he commanded among his peers. He played with Rainbow, formed by Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. His tenure with the band was from 1975 to 1980 and saw him power through tracks like "Stargazer" and "A Light in the Black," both of which showcased his ability to ride the crest of heavy guitar riffing with speed and precision. His collaboration with Rainbow was a period of prolific output; their music took on the color of Powell's driving percussive style, and album sales soared.
The 80s and 90s saw Powell continue to etch his legend across the annals of rock history, with stints with Michael Schenker Group, Whitesnake, and his return to Black Sabbath for their "Headless Cross" and "Tyr" albums. Wherever he went, Powell's influence was undeniable, and his presence would often elevate the sound of the bands he was with to new heights.
Apart from his legendary group work, Powell was known for his unapologetic live performances. His use of explosive pyrotechnics at shows led to thrilling spectacles, with audiences left in awe as he dominated the stage both sonically and visually. One of his trademarks was his ability to produce an orchestrated thunderstorm of sound that left concert-goers in no doubt of his mastery behind the drum skins.
Off stage, Powell was marked by an authenticity that won him many friends. A raconteur, he would often regale others with stories from his career, and though he had a love for fast cars—one given serious expression through his participation in motor racing—his focus never drifted far from music.
Tragically, Cozy Powell’s life was cut short in a car accident on April 5, 1998. The void left behind in the music world was palpable; his contribution to the musical tapestry had been profound. Powell’s influence on subsequent generations of rock and metal drummers cannot be overstated. Artists from across the spectrum have cited him as a critical influence, his legacy reverberating through the decades.
Celebrated for his flair, technical ability, and sheer power, Cozy Powell’s lasting impact is woven into the fabric of music history. His rhythms breathe life into recordings yet to this day and his storied career continues to be a guiding light for aspiring drummers who dare to dance with their own devils.
