Encouraged by his father, a native New Yorker, and his mother from a Russian-Jewish family, Max started playing the drums at the age of six. By the time he was a teenager, he was already playing with local groups in New Jersey. His big break came in 1974 when he answered a Rolling Stone ad: “Drummer wanted: must play loud.” The advertisement led him to an audition for a little-known band fronted by Bruce Springsteen. Weinberg's impeccable timing and hard-hitting style earned him the spot in the E Street Band.
