The son of a Professor of Engineering, Christopherson's creative leanings were seemingly at odds with his familial roots, offering a preview of the unconventional paths he would later pursue. His first renowned foray into the music industry was as a member of the band Throbbing Gristle, founded in 1975 alongside industrial music titans Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, and Chris Carter. The group is credited with coining the term "industrial music," a genre characterized by its harsh, mechanical soundscapes and stark nihilistic aesthetics. With Christopherson’s involvement, Throbbing Gristle's performances were rife with challenging themes that tested the audience's thresholds, ranging from politics to sexuality. Apart from his musical contributions, Christopherson's graphic design prowess shaped the visual identity of Throbbing Gristle. His work as a designer with Hipgnosis, the art design group famous for iconic album covers—Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" being among them—further cemented his visual credibility. Christopherson's ability to bridge the auditory with the visual became a hallmark of his artistic output. By 1981, following the dissolution of Throbbing Gristle, Christopherson co-founded Psychic TV with Genesis P-Orridge, continuing to push boundaries.
